One day a long time ago, I asked my best friend to watch my daughters for a couple hours while I ran errands. During this time our puppy grabbed my youngest daughter’s beloved stuffed bunny in his mouth and took off through the house. The more they all chased him, the more he thought it was a game. Thankfully the bunny was saved, but not without many, many (did I say many?) tears. When I came home and asked how the time went, my friend looked me in the eyes the with the most serious expression I have ever seen and said, “There were highs, there were lows… I didn’t think we were going to make it.”
There couldn’t be a more perfect sentiment than that statement for how my partner Willie M and I felt planning the first of our Style Clinic Series. Our vision was to create a safe space to help people let go of what was holding them back from achieving the best version of themselves. We wanted to not only give women the knowledge of how personal style is the way the world sees you, but also it tells the world how you relate to it. Translating who are on in the inside and who we want to become into our everyday lives through style without sounding preachy or boring was no easy task. Achieving this goal meant that we would have to share some personal things about ourselves and how we all have had body issues that we need to overcome, even those who work in fashion.
Our first reaction may have been: F*CK THAT. Who wants relive (or continue to live depending on where you are in your life) what held/holds us back from being the best version of ourselves? Plus wasn’t this supposed to be fun?
The lows were fear of the anticipation of how people would react to our message. We really didn’t know if we could accomplish what we set out to do. But then, standing in front of a room full of men and women and really sharing how we got to the point of wanting to help other people to know their worth, we experienced the highs. By guiding everyone through a series of questions, they were able to pinpoint their own unique style. After a series of tips and personal stories, we were able to feel the energy switch into “Hey! We can DO this!” And that’s when we realized, we were in fact going to make it.
Thank you to everyone who allowed us to take a few hours of their time to attend the first of the Style Clinic Series. It was such an amazing experience and we are truly grateful for your presence and participation. We can’t wait to do it again!
